Fire Hazard Zones in Napa Valley

This map and 3D visualization were created in QGIS and show the fire hazard zones in Napa Valley and the American Viniculture Areas (AVA). The geoprocessing operations clip, dissolve, and intersection was applied to present the data for a specified geographic area. Geometry attributes were calculated to obtain the square kilometers, square miles, and percentage of area covered within the fire hazard zones. The visualization shows the locations of the Bed & Breakfast and the wineries that attract over 40,000 visitors annually.

Bridging the Darien Gap

This map was created in ArcGIS and shows the two least-cost paths to cross the Darien Gap from origin to destination points. The origin point is in Yaviza, Panama, which is the endpoint for the Pan American Highway. Two destination points, the towns of Apartado and Chigorodo in Columbia, are the connection points to Yaviza. This incomplete analysis fails to account for several other roadbuilding cost drivers through the Darien Gap. Applying additional environmental and geological features would change the cost distance formula and may change the results presented in this analysis.

The Impact of Homeless Buffer Zones in Boyle Heights

This map was created in ArcGIS using geoprocessing and overlay analysis to show the impacts of homeless buffer zones in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The neighborhood comprises 6 square miles with a homeless population of approximately 7600 individuals, shared with downtown Los Angeles and Northeast Los Angeles. Boyle Heights features include 21 schools, 13 parks, over 1900 bridges, and six homeless shelters. The total buffer zone encompasses 3.7 square miles, creating a 60% reduction in available land for the homeless population to sleep and camp.
